The Chapman home schooling adventure began in 1994. We made it through with flying colors. This journey developed a passion within me for helping students to succeed in learning. I have discovered along the way that I love teaching. Who knew? God knew. Along the way, He has given me a heart for teens, and He has given me opportunities to develop skills for teaching teens . Since we started home schooling our three kiddos have gone on to graduate from home school, graduate from college, and are gainfully employed. Hurray! As a famliy, we participated with several co-ops along the way. I have taught writing, literature, book-making, SAT prep, worldviews, logic, speech, and debate. My classes have written essays, novels, analyzed literature, published newsletters, given speeches, tackled debate, written poetry, and learned to be successful in a classroom setting. The greatest pleasure is to hear former students and parents return with success stories from their college experience as a result of these classes. I love to consult with families about home schooling and especially those families dealing with struggling children.

I home schooled my 4 children for 12 years and feel very blessed to be able to continue teaching in the homeschool community.

With a BA in English and Sociology from Central Michigan University, I have taught in the public, private, and homeschool community for over 20 years. I currently hold a teaching certificate in Michigan, Indiana, and Texas.  I am also trained and certified in the Orton-Gillingham Method which allows me to tutor children and adults with learning differences, which is very rewarding.  I am also certified by the College Board to teach AP English courses, which are offered at THEO as AP Lit and Comp.  That class is also available as a dual credit class through Colorado Christian University.

Being trained in a variety of teaching experiences has been not only beneficial to teaching my own children but also others.  I taught at RHSA, PATH as well as Orchard, where I sat on the board for six years. In addition to my classes, I am very passionate about helping students with learning differences. I tutor many students with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, as well as auditory and visual processing issues. Additionally, I tutor students with SAT prep- specializing in Verbal and Writing skills. My passion is teaching and helping students realize their full potential.

 Testimony

Growing up in Louisiana as a preacher’s kid, I have always been surrounded by people of faith. I’m extremely grateful that God gave me Christian parents who shared and lived their faith. When I was about eight years old, God convicted me of my sin, and I ask him to forgive my sins and be my Lord and Savior. I was baptized by my father. It has been my desire from that time for God to be glorified in my life. I have remained active in a local church all my life, serving in various capacities. As a mother, I have endeavored to instill the same faith in my children.

One of my favorite scripture verses is from King David, “ Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” (Psalms 86.11).

Teacher BIO

I received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Louisiana State University in 1986. After college, I moved to Texas to work for a local defense contractor as a software engineer. I married my husband Charles in 1988. After nine years in the corporate world, I felt God calling me home to be a full-time wife and mother. We have four children that I educated at home from 1996 to 2017. We started attending THEO in 2010. My children completed Cornerstone Curriculum’s Worldviews of the Western World program at THEO while I graded for Mrs. Stewart and/or Mr. Yandell for six years.

I began teaching at THEO in 2011 with Saxon 76. I added Starting Points in 2013, World History and Geography in 2015, Human Geography in 2017, and Worldviews I in 2020.

Personal

My greatest goal in this life is to live a life that is honoring and pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ.  My second greatest desire was to raise my four children to want to do the same.  Now I am a grandmother and I want to have a Godly influence on my grandchildren.

I believe God has given me the gift of teaching.  Therefore, my desire is to use this gift to help others reach their greatest potential for Christ.  This includes teaching young people math. I want math to be fun and filled with important life lessons that will help my students as they prepare for college and for life.

As a calligraphy teacher: I started out self-taught in the early 80’s and soon realized that on my own, I wasn’t going to be able to get to the level of excellence I wanted. I joined the Dallas Calligraphy Guild, which was like strapping on booster rockets, enabling me to learn a variety of hands through classes and workshops. Eventually I became president of the guild and even better, workshop chairman, which meant choosing the instructors we would invite to come to Dallas and teach us, such as Queen Elizabeth’s calligrapher! I taught classes for several years until the pain of post-polio syndrome forced me to stop. But now that document cameras have been invented, I can demonstrate letter forms from my scooter and teach again!

My clients include ExxonMobil, the Dallas Cowboys, Ross Perot, Chanel, and many brides (whose wedding invitations I have addressed). It’s a joy to be able to bring to class projects I’m working on so I can explain my work as a professional calligrapher.

As a worldview and apologetics teacher (for the Building Confident Christians class): Ray and I have been on staff with Probe Ministries since college (1975): Probe helps people think biblically about a wide range of topics. I have the privilege of writing and speaking on some of those topics from a biblical perspective, informed by four decades of Bible study and teaching the Word. Probe’s website (Probe.org) is my “third child”; I created its first iteration and have uploaded 1800+ articles and email answers as a resource for anyone in the world who speaks English and has an internet connection. So I know what’s on our website(!), and it’s these articles which our students read in preparation for each class. The printed articles go into a notebook to become a valuable resource for years to come.

My passion is “connecting the dots” between faith and science, and equipping believers to be confident ambassadors for Christ through an understanding of worldview and apologetics. My wife Sue and I have served with Probe Ministries, a Christian worldview and apologetics ministry, since 1975. We both love to see the light bulb come on when a student, no matter what age, gets an “Aha moment.”

Although I have served in ministry since college, all of my education is in science. I first earned a B.S. in zoology from the University of Illinois. At the University of North Texas, I earned an M.S. in population genetics, which is actually evolutionary biology. I knew that if I were going to be a critic of evolution, I needed to understand it better than the evolutionists. At the University of Texas at Dallas, I earned a second Masters and a Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology. So I have studied evolution on the macro level of animals and the micro level of molecules, all of which served to solidify my absolute conviction that God is Creator who has left His fingerprints all over His creation—and I see science as the study of those fingerprints.

I have been privileged to lecture and debate on dozens of college and university campuses in the U.S. and internationally. I have addressed issues in the creation/evolution debate as well as other science-related issues such as the environment, genetic engineering, medical ethics, and sexually transmitted diseases. I am also a Fellow with the Discovery Institute in the area of Intelligent Design.

Sue (an experienced and acclaimed teacher as well) and I enjoy team teaching as she assists me by adding color commentary, insightful comments and illustrations, and her own take on some of our apologetics material.

Experience

16.5 years of nursing experience, working in labor and delivery, newborn nursery, postpartum, emergency room, including 13.5 years as an Air Fore nurse, where I reached the rank of Major and worked in nursing administration

Homeschool teacher since 1994, teaching my four children at home, as well as at N-Tech, for 15 years, and THEO since its inception

Japanese tutoring from my home

Personal

The LORD has blessed me with a wonderful husband to whom I have been married since 1983, and four precious children.  God called me to stay home with my children when we were expecting our third. I said “Goodbye” to my Air Force career and have not regretted it!

As part of the N-Tech co-op, I taught a variety of subjects at all levels K-12, including science, history, music appreciation, Japanese, and Spanish.

At THEO, I have had the privilege of teaching Starting Points and assisting in the other Worldview classes. Ensuring students are grounded in their faith and can articulate their worldview is a passion for me. I feel it is a paramount aspect of their education.

I also teach Japanese language courses for high school, drawing on my experience of having lived in Japan for two years and having studied the language there. I have enjoyed learning languages for as long as I can remember!

Additionally, I teach Saxon 6/5 math for 5th – 6th grades. It keeps the left side of my brain happy!

The homeschooling adventure is an exciting one and it helps having others come along side at times to support one another in the endeavor.
