A quote from an outstanding Acting 3 class member who was a National Finalist in a nationwide Shakespeare Monologue Contest while in A3, and became a Theatre student at college with multiple leading roles:
Mr CB “I want to thank you so much for your instruction and care. So many of the things you taught me, and the opportunities you made possible, prepared me for the work I have while at college and I am incredibly grateful. I will miss your classes, your energy, light and insight…..I am taking Shakespeare this Spring (which most of the other students dread) and I feel so equipped and confident due to your teaching and enthusiasm. You believed in me and helped me to unlock my passion for the Bard…….Praying many blessings for you and your beautiful family………”
Greetings from Robert Clover-Brown (Mr. CB) formerly known as “Shakespeare Man” – holder of a Master of Arts degree in History from Cambridge University (MA); a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (FCA); an experienced actor and touring teaching artist, and an American Citizen since June 2006!
A FCA in England holds an equivalent business qualification to an American CPA, and for many years part of my brain was devoted to pursuing an entrepreneurial career as CFO for a diverse mix of corporations, and an investor. Teaching one semester Economics classes is an enjoyably relevant experience.
Numerous trips across the English Channel. and an AP-level education in French and German, mean that teaching several year-long French classes is also a pleasure.
Another part of my brain has been devoted for many years to working in theatre, on and off stage, and on camera – being featured in TV commercials and in print advertising. My Central London agents also booked me for commissions portraying Shakespeare, in full costume
Following a move with my family from London to Dallas in 2002, I have been featured in TV commercials and print advertising; taught AP European History, coached Upper School actors at two private schools; devised workshop productions for performance by students at Dallas International School ; written and performed a teacher training DVD for Dallas Opera’s Education Dept., and worked as a Performing Arts consultant.
As a touring teaching artist. I wrote and performed a variety of “Shakespeare Man” programs for local theatres, schools, libraries and adult groups across Texas and far beyond. A live appearance, in my Shakespeare costume, on WFAA Good Morning Texas, between two rap artists and Father Christmas was great fun!
While on tour, as Robert Clover-Brown I offered “Insider’s insights into English literature and history,” which drew on my lifelong fascination with, and study of, European literature and culture; made in-depth presentations about Shakespeare’s life; taught drama classes, and coached student actors.
Among many great novelists, poets and dramatists within the European Literary Canon – in addition to Shakespeare, as implied above – I am particularly drawn to the life and work of Austen, Cervantes, Chekhov, Dickens, Dostoevsky, Ibsen, Mansfield, Stoppard and Woolf.
I therefore feel blessed to have had the opportunity to create classes which, as well as those mentioned above, have included HS European Literature; HS & JH Literature in Action & Storyboarding: Illustrating literature (grades 6-8)
My year-long Acting classes (grades 6-12) comprise Acting 1, 2 and 3. Our dress rehearsals and performances are located at The Core Theatre in Richardson.
For students who are eager to interact with creatively minded colleagues, but not learn lines, my Improvisational Theatre (Improv) class (grades 6-12) has proved to be ideal.
For younger students (grades 4-6) my Introduction to Acting & Stagecraft class is a great opportunity for them to learn acting basics and kind, collaborative team work.
Two of our HS representatives at ESU’s branch contests for Shakespeare Monologues placed FIRST, amidst a large group of talented young actors from state and private schools. and were therefore National Finalists
My American-born wife, Lesley, and I are members of HPUMC, where we were married in 1994.
Our UT graduate daughter is a Fellow at an award winning Childrens hospital in Cincinnati. Our son also graduated from UT. Then played keys for a popular local band – Brisco – and is a Lead Sound Engineer at a music studio close to Austin. My oldest son lives in MA and has two young sons
Lesley is a SMU Fine Arts graduate and, having qualified as a teacher in 2019, taught for Pre-K Special Needs in HPISD. Since then she has been an Art Teacher in RISD and DISD. I have volunteered for Night Owls and Jesters at HPUMC, which offer remarkable special needs programs, including theatre
