Why THEO Teachers Stand Apart

At THEO, our teachers make all the difference.

Every THEO educator brings deep subject expertise, a heart for Christian education, and real understanding of homeschooling dynamics. They know your child isn’t in a traditional classroom—and they design their instruction accordingly.

Unlike rigid school systems, THEO gives teachers the freedom to create their own curriculum and adapt to different learning styles. This means your child gets personalized attention and teaching approaches that actually fit how they learn best. Our teachers don’t just deliver lessons—they inspire curiosity, build confidence, and help students discover the joy of learning.

With decades of combined experience, our faculty has taught thousands of homeschool students. They’ve navigated learning differences, prepared students for college, and watched countless families transform from uncertain to confident in their homeschool journey.

Our Teachers by Subject

ENGLISH & LITERATURE

Our English teachers cultivate strong writers, critical thinkers, and passionate readers. From foundational writing skills to advanced literature analysis, they help students develop the communication abilities essential for college and career success.

Whether your child needs grammar support, essay writing instruction, or exposure to classic and contemporary literature, our English faculty provides engaging, rigorous instruction that builds confident communicators.

Alynda is the Director of Academic Adventures, THEO’s program for elementary-aged students, while also teaching multiple English and History classes from elementary through high school.

Sharing her love of education with students is one of Alynda’s greatest joys. “Whether in an elementary language arts or social studies class or high school English and History, I love working with students and having a front-row seat to their educational journey!”

Alynda Long
Director of Academic Adventures | Secondary & Dual Credit Instructor

Alynda leads THEO’s program for elementary students while serving as a secondary and dual credit instructor. She considers it a privilege to have a front-row seat to her students’ journeys as they wrestle with big ideas and examine literature and history through the lens of their faith.

Experience & Education

With over twenty years in the classroom, Alynda has taught in public schools, homeschooled her own children, and tutored students from elementary through college. She is also a professional editor and writer holding a BA in Literary Studies (UT Dallas) and an MLS in Creative Writing (SMU).

Personal:

Alynda lives in Collin County with her husband, Brian. She’s a proud mom to a grown daughter and two teenagers, plus one amazing grandson—all of whom keep her on her toes! A devoted follower of Jesus, she loves the Dallas Stars, live theatre, and traveling.

She also has a serious weakness for puns—she’s a “prose” at them—and coffee. Lots of coffee. Without it, she’d be depresso!

Nathan Jensen returns to THEO as a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Dallas, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Literary Studies with Honors and a Teaching Certification for 7-12 ELA (English). In the spring semester of 2019, Nathan worked as a substitute teacher for Allen ISD and taught as a long-term substitute for two months at Erickson Middle School in Allen. Also, Nathan has taught throughout his life at a variety of Church programs such as VBS, Awana, St. Paul’s Sunday School, and Grace Kids.

Having grown up in the homeschool community, Nathan appreciates the opportunity to offer the same outstanding education that he received to the next generation. As a child, Nathan struggled to learn to read, so he understands the challenges of becoming a proficient reader and writer and aims to nurture the reader that exists in every student.

Involved in theater since a young age, Nathan has performed in over 50 different productions, including both semi-professional and professional jobs. During the last 6 years, he expanded his focus to include film, creating and producing a web series on YouTube called Project Jumpchute. Working on every aspect of this project, from writing to constructing sets to editing, Nathan learned what it takes to produce filmed content and what mistakes for beginners to avoid. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to share what he has learned about the process of creating films with future filmmakers.

Donna Cantu

I home schooled my 4 children for 12 years and feel very blessed to be able to continue teaching in the homeschool community.

With a BA in English and Sociology from Central Michigan University, I have taught in the public, private, and homeschool community for over 20 years. I currently hold a teaching certificate in Michigan, Indiana, and Texas.  I am also trained and certified in the Orton-Gillingham Method which allows me to tutor children and adults with learning differences, which is very rewarding.  I am also certified by the College Board to teach AP English courses, which are offered at THEO as AP Lit and Comp.  That class is also available as a dual credit class through Colorado Christian University.

Being trained in a variety of teaching experiences has been not only beneficial to teaching my own children but also others.  I taught at RHSA, PATH as well as Orchard, where I sat on the board for six years. In addition to my classes, I am very passionate about helping students with learning differences. I tutor many students with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, as well as auditory and visual processing issues. Additionally, I tutor students with SAT prep- specializing in Verbal and Writing skills. My passion is teaching and helping students realize their full potential.

Donna has been teaching for over 35 years- nearly 20 years at THEO! Teaching is a ministry for her. She delights in having a front row seat to her student’s “light bulb” moments. Having had the privilege of homeschooling her own four children, she now participates in her seven grandchildren’s education.

Throughout his classes, Robert draws upon his life-long love for, and in-depth knowledge of, literature in all its forms and his love of, and participation in, visually creative activities, including acting.
For Literature in Action, students work collaboratively and separately to create a rich diversity of book-related Projects for presentation in class—so each student can be inspired by, and learn from, their classmates in a mutually supportive, very creative environment. Recent projects have included creating geometry-based “tesseracts” (for A Wrinkle in Time), scripts for short scenes acted in class, computer animations, interviews with the author, short movies, letters between characters, movie posters, collages, making “oral reports from the field” as a reporter, costumed characters, shoe box dioramas, and “storyboard” versions of vivid chapters.

Vicki began teaching in private preschools during high school and college as she pursued her degree and dream of becoming a professional educator. She taught grades 4, 5, and 6 for ten years in public schools and holds teaching certificates in Texas and Virginia.

When her two sons had learning styles and challenges that needed environments and methods beyond what their public and private schools were providing, God called her to begin homeschooling them toward the end of their elementary years. “It has been a blessing to see God use THEO to impact our entire family.” Vicki began teaching at THEO once her youngest was a senior.
At THEO, Vicki strives for each student to embrace how he/she learns best and take ownership of that path, with parent and teacher support. She is privileged to work with students from Friday Adventures kindergarteners all the way up to seniors in Money Management God’s Way and Successful Student Strategies.
“My high school classes incorporate a variety of teaching methods selected to guide students to make mature choices in order to be intentional teens and later thriving adults. My junior high classes deep dive into World Literature, Study Skills, and Texas History at a level that moves students towards applying what they read, learn and discuss to their own lives.”

Mrs. Musall taught grades 4, 5, and 6 for ten years in public schools and holds teaching certificates in Texas and Virginia. When her two sons had learning difficulties that needed environments and methods beyond what their public and private schools were providing, God called her to begin homeschooling them.

She began teaching at THEO once her youngest was a senior. Mrs. Musall strives for each student to embrace how he/she learns. She empowers students to take ownership of their learning while partnering with parents and teachers for support. She is privileged to work with students from elementary through high school and strives to integrate Jesus into every lesson.

Mrs. Musall is passionate about helping students overcome challenges and gladly partners with parents to ensure needed accommodations are in place.

Electives & Enrichment

Our elective teachers offer unique courses that spark curiosity and develop practical skills. From logic and apologetics to forensic science, money management, and technology, these classes broaden your child’s education beyond traditional core subjects.

These passionate educators help students discover new interests, develop specialized knowledge, and prepare for future opportunities.

Ray Bohlin

Ray Bohlin, Ph.D.

Contact through Sue Bohlin:

Dr. Bohlin brings decades of experience in Christian apologetics and worldview training. As a speaker and writer for Probe Ministries, he equips students to stand firm in their faith against secular philosophies.

The Building Confident Christians course helps students understand not only WHAT they believe, but WHY they believe it. The class presents a strong defense for the truth and logic of Christianity through classic apologetics, as well as covering cultural apologetics issues such as a compassionate but biblical perspective on homosexuality, how to watch a movie, environmentalism, world religions, genetic engineering, and other topics.
“This one-year class provides a strong, secure foundation in which to stand against the world’s ‘philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ’ (Col. 2:8).”

Dr. Bohlin’s love of science and his scientist’s filter have a way of creeping into the way he teaches, so students receive a “science-flavored” exposure to worldview and apologetics. “This results in a greater depth of worship and awe for our Creator God for all of us!”

As a Fellow with the Discovery Institute, Dr. Bohlin weaves Intelligent Design into much of his teaching. His love of science (M.S. in population genetics, Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology) and his scientist’s filter have a way of creeping into the way he teaches, so students receive a “science-flavored” exposure to worldview and apologetics. “This results in a greater depth of worship and awe for our Creator God for all of us!”

The Bohlins have been speaking and writing about worldview and apologetics for Probe Ministries for 50+ years. Sue teaches almost half of the content for BCC.

Note:

This class is in-person only. If a student is sick, with a one-hour notice via text, audio can be recorded and made available for download the next day.

Sue Bohlin

Sue, also a writer and speaker for Probe Ministries, serves on the board of Mama Bear Apologetics and Living Hope Ministries (dealing with unwanted homosexuality). Both of these involvements shape her teaching, which includes almost half of the BCC classes.

I have had the opportunity to explore many purposes from the Lord over the years, and I am so grateful for each experience that has led to where I am today. I was born and raised in Austin, TX where I grew up getting to volunteer at a school for students with special needs and working several jobs in childcare and afterschool facilities. I have had a love for working with children for as long as I can remember! I also did several years of modeling which sparked my interest in the art of photography. I attended college and graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I met my husband in Lubbock and we moved to the Dallas area, where we met our church family and have spent time volunteering in the children’s and teen ministries. I taught in Plano ISD in both a high school and a middle school as a Special Education teacher for several years. Six months after our second child was born, my husband and I decided that I should be a stay-at-home mama to our then 2-year-old son, and daughter. What a blessing that time was to get to spend so much time with our kiddos in their early years. However, we never thought that homeschool life would be a part of our story! Our children attended elementary school in Wylie ISD and during that time, I opened my business, Lindsey Buerger Photography. Working as a business owner and a portrait photographer, I have learned so much, I have met so many incredible people, and I have gained confidence and learned that it is so important to share our gifts that can bring joy to others with the world. During my son’s 5th grade year, the Lord started calling our family to homeschool him and boy am I so glad that we trusted Him because our children are thriving and loving learning! Our son is now in the 7th grade and our daughter is in her first year of homeschool in 5th grade. The THEO community has been such a blessing to them this year, and I am excited to get to participate as well, teaching photography. I can’t wait to meet you! You can see some of my photography work at www.LindseyBuergerPhotography.com where I primarily work with high school seniors!

I am honored to teach Photography with a Digital Camera and Yearbook/Project Management here at THEO. My students are a tremendous blessing, and I love watching their confidence grow as they discover their creativity throughout the year.

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, I am a graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies. After moving to the Dallas area in 2007, I taught Special Education in Plano ISD at both the middle and high school levels, reflecting my heart for students with special needs and learning differences.

After becoming a stay-at-home mom, I opened Lindsey Buerger Photography as a portrait photographer. I believe God calls us to use our gifts to bring joy to others, which is why I love helping students grow in skill and confidence through photography and yearbook.

During our son’s 5th grade year, the Lord called our family to homeschool. Both of our children now attend THEO, and this community has been a wonderful blessing and support in our homeschooling journey.

I’m so happy to join the community of home schoolers at THEO.

I’m married with two children and a precious daughter in law. I’ve been homeschooling since 2010 and graduated my youngest in the spring of 2025.

I’m passionate about homeschooling and helping others reach their educational goals. I’ve been part of the N-TECH co-op for over a decade now and have been serving with the Charlotte Mason in North East Texas team for 3 years. I’ve taught a variety of classes over the years with my favorites being chemistry and history. I’ve taught chemistry at N-TECH since 2015, and plan to continue teaching there and at THEO.

I also do private homeschooling and tutoring.
This year I will be offering the following classes at THEO:
Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Fine Arts

Our arts teachers believe every child has creative potential. From visual arts to drama, music to film production, they provide professional-level instruction in welcoming environments where students can explore, experiment, and express themselves.

Our fine arts faculty includes working professionals who bring real-world experience to their teaching, giving students both technical skills and artistic confidence.

Hi, my name is Helen Green (a local Christian artist) originally from Boerne, Texas.  I’ve been married almost 20 years to my faithful husband, Kelly Green.  We have a 14-year old daughter named Grace, plus a loud Sheepdog named Darla.

I love to paint and encourage others along the way. Let’s conquer the fear of messing up and start drawing and painting. My style is light and airy from impressionistic to contemporary, yet I have a variety of styles in between.

My background has been in retail advertising as Sr. Art Director/Grahic Designer for sixteen years, yet, my real art enthusiasm began by watching my mother paint on canvas, going to galleries and flipping through her art magazines. Now my own daughter loves to design & create, and we hope your loved ones will be inspired too.

The past ten years, Philippians 4:8 has been my prayer and hope for future artist, “Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things”.

I have sold my art through local stores, curators, Instagram, Minted.com and a major national retailer.  As an artist, there is joy guiding numerous art camps from small artisan batches to church size events, afterschool programs, homeschool (mostly in my little home).  Once per year, I donate paintings to Scottish Rite Hospital for their Summer of Colors silent auction.

Looking forward to our time together and grateful.

As a calligraphy teacher: I started out self-taught in the early 80’s and soon realized that on my own, I wasn’t going to be able to get to the level of excellence I wanted. I joined the Dallas Calligraphy Guild, which was like strapping on booster rockets, enabling me to learn a variety of hands through classes and workshops. Eventually I became president of the guild and even better, workshop chairman, which meant choosing the instructors we would invite to come to Dallas and teach us, such as Queen Elizabeth’s calligrapher!

My clients include ExxonMobil, the Dallas Cowboys, Ross Perot, Chanel, and many brides (whose wedding invitations I have addressed). It’s a joy to be able to bring to class projects I’m working on so I can explain my work as a professional calligrapher.

As a worldview and apologetics teacher (for the Building Confident Christians class): Ray and I have been on staff with Probe Ministries since college (1975): Probe helps people think biblically about a wide range of topics. I have the privilege of writing and speaking on some of those topics from a biblical perspective, informed by five decades of Bible study and teaching the Word. Probe’s website (Probe.org) is my “third child”; I created its first iteration and have uploaded 2000+ articles and email answers as a resource for anyone in the world who speaks English and has an internet connection. So I know what’s on our website(!), and it’s these articles which our students read in preparation for each class. The printed articles go into a notebook to become a valuable resource for years to come.

Lindsey Buerger

Lindsey Buerger

Kathy Franda homeschooled her 3 children for 12 years graduating the youngest in May 2011.  She has been teaching science, computer, geography, psychology, and elective classes at THEO since 2009 and other local co-ops since 2000.  She has a B.A. from University of Rochester in New York.  Kathy’s lifelong passion for science began at an early age growing up at and exploring the estuaries and intertidal zone of a barrier island in New Jersey. She has traveled to many of the states, countries, and marine habitats that she teaches about – often with National Geographic educational programs. She believes in “hands on” learning to improve initial learning, long term retention and student interest and teaches utilizing varied methods to benefit various learning strengths.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve at THEO. With a background in music education, leadership development, and ministry, my passion has always been to help others grow—not just in their talents, but in their faith and character as well.

I hold a Master’s degree in Music Conducting from the American Band College and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Southern California. Over the years, I have had the privilege of teaching and directing music programs at various schools from elementary to high school, mentoring youth in faith-based settings, and even performing as a lead trumpet player for the Los Angeles Lakers Band. I’ve enjoyed serving as an adjunct music professor, a youth ministry leader, and recently founding Father Power 365, a mentorship and discipleship initiative.

Whether in the classroom, on the stage, or at home, I strive to make a lasting impact by fostering leadership, faith, and creativity in those around me. Through every experience, I have seen God’s hand at work, shaping my journey and deepening my desire to pour into the next generation.

More than any accomplishments, my greatest joy is my family. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife of 20 years and three incredible children—two sons, ages 13 and 11, and an 8-year-old daughter. Our home is filled with music, laughter, and daily reminders of God’s grace.

Hi! My name is Steve Horvath. I am originally from California, but after I met my beautiful Texan wife, the rest was history! I have been in the Lone Star State about 16 years now. I have 15 years of private guitar teaching experience, as well as 7 years of worship leading experience in which I have led and directed a band.  I have been playing and studying the guitar for the past 23 years.  I love teaching and helping people reach their musical goals and aspirations!

I have been married to my wife Courtney for 16 years and we have three sons – Seth (13),  Caleb (11) and Ian (4).  I am also a fan of bold coffee, traveling and photography. I have traveled overseas on missions trips to Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and Ecuador. I was home schooled myself until I reached the 8th grade!

Students also have the option to participate in recitals and various other performance opportunities.  You can also look at our website or FB page included in the links below if that would be helpful.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Thank you!

Steve Horvath has been teaching music for over 20 years and brings a blend of real-world experience, formal study, and a heart for students. He has studied music theory at the college level, trained under accomplished musicians, played in bands, and served as a worship pastor for seven years. Steve also has extensive experience leading and directing kids’ bands, helping young musicians grow both individually and as part of a group.

Alongside his wife Courtney, Steve has spent more than a decade running a successful local music school with a team of instructors serving hundreds of students. His teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music should be enjoyable and meaningful while also building strong fundamentals. Steve understands that students pursue music for different reasons, and he works to encourage growth, confidence, and appropriate challenge for each learner.

Steve continues to serve on worship teams and has played guitar at churches throughout the DFW area. He and Courtney have three children (ages 21, 19, and 12). Having been homeschooled himself through 8th grade — and homeschooling two of his own children — Steve values education deeply and hopes every student finds joy in music while growing through the process.

Friday Adventures & Academic Adventures Staff

Behind every great teacher is a support system that makes learning possible. Our administrative and support staff ensure smooth operations, warm welcomes, and excellent service for every THEO family.

Director of Friday Adventures

“Teaching at THEO checks off every box for what I believe God wants me to be doing in this season of my life!”

Teresa is thankful God opened the door to be a part of supporting homeschool families, as she homeschooled her sons as well. A newbie Texan having recently moved to Plano from Oregon where she lived her entire life, Teresa and her husband felt God’s strong leading to move in order to be closer to their 2 sons who both serve in ministry and their young families. They have 5 amazing grandchildren and can’t wait to live life side by side rather than through FaceTime!
To make the transition to Texas, Teresa resigned from the Oregon private Christian School that she directed for the last 7 years. Prior to that directorship, she taught Kindergarten and directed another private school for 15 years! She homeschooled both of their sons through high school and led the area parent co-op group, as well as taught classes for homeschoolers.

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, Portland State University

Experience:

“I am beyond excited to begin this new adventure at THEO and look forward to getting to know the children and families as we partner together to give children the richest education! What a wonderful adventure life is when God is at the helm!”

Miss Gibson attended RHSA (Richardson Homeschool Association) all through elementary and middle school. She then attended Town North (or The Green Roof Co-op) for all 4 years of high school and graduated in 2018. She also attended THEO her Junior and Senior year. After graduating, she became a student at Collin College. she joined the Sign Language Interpreter Program, and graduated in August, 2021.

Miss Gibson has always loved working with kids. She has helped at a summer Bible camp, taught piano, worked in childcare at her church, assisted at a Vacation Bible School for deaf kids, etc.

She has been a nanny for several families and is now a teacher. She taught last year at Friday Adventures and is teaching again this year. She can’t wait to see what the Lord has next for her!

Luis Jimenez

Although I struggled with finding my calling in my early life, I knew for certain that I wanted to help others appreciate the world God has created and expand the opportunities available to them in the future.

From economics to pathobiology, my college studies gave me a deep appreciation for the sciences and a deep desire to study and understand the world. Working as a teaching assistant for my science professor, leading a team at a local Chick-fil-A, and instructing a Lego Robotics class at Tarrant County over the summers have given me valuable experience and a clear image of my calling.

As a teacher and as a Christian, I want to serve others and further His kingdom in any way I can, especially in supporting homeschooled families. By teaching at THEO, I put my skills, enthusiasm, and knowledge to use preparing students for whatever challenges await them in life.

Amanda Redding

Amanda has had a diverse and exciting experience in education and is thrilled to continue the journey as a teacher at THEO.
As a student, she attended private and public schools, and was homeschooled from 3rd-8th grade. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in Library Science from UNT (obtained largely through online work way back in 2012 before online classes were as prolific as they are now).
As a teacher, Amanda has taught in public school and homeschool co-ops, worked as a private tutor, and homeschooled her own children from pre-k through eighth grade. They’ve even enjoyed roadschooling alongside remote work for a few years! “I am blessed to have seen so much during my twenty years in education, and I’m ready to continue that work with THEO.”

Family:

Amanda’s husband Kelly and she have been married for 21 years and have two children in high school (Rachel) and middle school (Travis). They are still homeschooling and plan to go all the way to graduation. “We love playing games, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying stories together through books, tv, and movies.”

Mission:

“My mission aligns perfectly with THEO – empowering parents to continue to choose home education, so that students succeed and families thrive.”

Our history teachers bring the past to life, helping students understand how historical events shape our present and future. From American history to world civilizations, they teach from a Christian worldview that recognizes God’s hand in human events.

Students learn to think critically about historical sources, understand different perspectives, and connect past events to current challenges—developing the informed citizenship essential in today’s world.

Mary G. Bell

Mary Bell (Greenwood-Bell)

Mary brings a wealth of experience from her 16.5 years as an Air Force nurse, where she reached the rank of Major and worked in nursing administration, along with her journey as a homeschool teacher since 1994.
When God called her to stay home with her children while expecting their third, Mary said “Goodbye” to her Air Force career and has not regretted it! She has been teaching her four children at home, as well as teaching at N-Tech for 15 years and THEO since its inception.
“Ensuring students are grounded in their faith and can articulate their worldview is a passion for me. I feel it is a paramount aspect of their education.” Mary has had the privilege of teaching Starting Points and assisting in other Worldview classes at THEO. She also teaches Japanese language courses and Saxon 6/5 math.

Education:

Experience:

Mary has been married since 1983 and has been blessed with four precious children. “The homeschooling adventure is an exciting one and it helps having others come along side at times to support one another in the endeavor. ‘Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.’ Prov. 27:17”
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your steps” (Proverbs 3:5-6) is one of Debbie’s favorite verses.
Teaching is one of Debbie’s passions, yet she did not realize the extent of this passion until the Lord directed her to homeschool their six children over 32 years ago. All six have graduated! Now she’s helping to school her grandchildren.
Along with teaching her own children and grandchildren, the Lord has provided opportunities for Debbie to teach others:

In 2010, Debbie was blessed with the ongoing opportunity to travel to different Home School Book Fairs representing a curriculum she has used with her children. “It gives me great pleasure to encourage and help parents in their homeschooling journey.” She also gives presentations at conferences and weekly webinars during the off-season.

Susan Bryant

I received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Louisiana State University in 1986. After college, I moved to Texas to work for a local defense contractor as a software engineer. I married my husband Charles in 1988. After nine years in the corporate world, I felt God calling me home to be a full-time wife and mother. We have four children that I educated at home from 1996 to 2017. We started attending THEO in 2010. My children completed Cornerstone Curriculum’s Worldviews of the Western World program at THEO while I graded for Mrs. Stewart and/or Mr. Yandell for six years.

I began teaching at THEO in 2011 with Saxon 76. I added Starting Points in 2013, World History and Geography in 2015, Human Geography in 2017, and Worldviews I in 2020.

Experience:

Below are introductory videos by Mrs. Bryant who will provide insight into each of her classes.  First up is her Worldview 1 class:

My name is Matthew Considine, and I will be co-teaching Worldviews here at THEO. As a former Worldviews student and THEO alumni (class of 2018), I understand just how useful Worldviews can be for higher education. I’ve found that it helps immensely in my ongoing college studies, and I’m excited to be able to give that gift of knowledge to my own students. I am currently an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Dallas, where I teach Sunday school and serve as Vice Chair of Youth Discipleship. I attend the University of Texas at Dallas, and I plan to pursue postgraduate education.

Public school, private school or homeschool?  What will it be?  Having teaching experience in all three has been a blessing that I love to share with others.  Sometimes it feels like I have been teaching all my life–and maybe I have.  Playing school was my favorite game when I was a kid.  Teaching experiences filled my teen years with meaningful activity.  I taught in Bible clubs, worked in day care, and started substituting while I was still in college.  (Dad was principal of a big Christian school, so I had an inside track on that one.)  My Bachelor of Science in Education (cum laude) comes from Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee.  As a Texas certified teacher I taught for 7 years in San Antonio public schools.  Those public school teaching experiences include 4 years in remedial reading programs (though I don’t call myself a reading specialist) and 3 years with gifted/talented language arts.  I was Teacher of the Year for my school for 2 years and runner-up for Teacher of the Year in my district one of those years.  Those awards recognized my habit of trying to make the subject meaningful to my students.

The next twenty years since were the richest and most rewarding of my teaching career–I raised and homeschooled my two children–giving me a variety of wonderful “aha” moments as well as my most challenging teaching experiences.  My son is a graduate of Bryan College and happily married with one child. My daughter graduated from Biola University. Both are doing well in the careers they chose to pursue. Both are active in their churches.

During those homeschool years I developed a passion for teaching history and government. When there was a need, I started a homeschool group in Alabama which called me leader for 6 years before my husband’s work moved us to Florida where we joined another homeschool group and I got familiar with yet another way of doing things.

I began teaching Starting Points at a co-op in the north Dallas area when we moved here in 2004.  Starting Points combined my love of history, literature, and Bible knowledge, so it was a good fit.  My daughter and I went through David Quine’s World Views of the Western World three year curriculum at home. That eventually transitioned into teaching World Views when THEO began.  Putting my favorite subjects together in a new format has been a challenge I have enjoyed (emphasis on the CHALLENGE.)  This is the most difficult subject I have ever taught—and the most rewarding.  Since 2004, I’ve been taking notes on world views and apologetics topics and putting them to use in the classroom. I would love to teach your child, as I taught mine to “Live with your brain turned on.”

Donna Cantu

Education and Certification:

Experience:

“I want each student who enters my classroom to feel recognized and loved as a child of God. Teaching is more than just subject mastery, it is fostering a love of the Lord and life-long learning. I know HE has called me to this vocation, and I feel very lucky to have found a home at THEO.”

Mathematics

Our mathematics teachers bring decades of combined experience teaching everything from elementary foundations to advanced calculus. We offer multiple curriculum options including Saxon, Glencoe, and Jacob’s—allowing us to match your child with the teaching approach that works best for their learning style.

Not sure which level is right for your student? Many of our high school math teachers provide placement testing to ensure students start at the appropriate level for success. While placement tests aren’t the only factor in deciding where to place students, they provide valuable information and a starting point for discussion.

Need extra support? We offer Math Lab—on-demand tutoring for registered THEO students through Algebra 2, available Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Jean grew up in South Houston and was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. During college, she met her husband and came to know Christ, developing a deep love for God’s Word that shaped her life and calling. Although she initially planned to teach high school math, the Lord led her instead into corporate training, where she taught and wrote instructional materials for a telecommunications company. Seven years later, God opened the door to motherhood and homeschooling, where she learned to adapt her teaching style for each of her four children’s unique strengths and needs. With a strong passion for math and science, she would be honored to share her passion for these subjects with your student.

Growing up in an unchurched family in South Houston, Jean was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. After accepting Christ in college, she devoured God’s Word and pursued her teaching dream. Jean spent years teaching proprietary database systems for telecommunications companies before the Lord called her to motherhood and homeschooling.

When her oldest child struggled with cognitive weaknesses requiring years of therapy, Jean learned to adapt her teaching style to ever-changing day-to-day strengths.

“I have become a very patient teacher, and I believe that every student has the ability to learn if we can tap into their strengths and help them overcome their weaknesses,” Jean shares.

“It has been my experience that the Lord uses my enthusiasm for math and science to motivate students to enjoy learning these subjects as well,” Jean shares.

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Magna Cum Laude, Texas Woman’s University (1992).

Experience:

Jean’s enthusiasm for mathematics and science motivates students to enjoy learning these subjects while discovering God’s hand in creation.

Lauren has a heart for helping students build confidence in mathematics by making complex concepts approachable and engaging. With a patient and encouraging teaching style, she emphasizes understanding over memorization and works to meet students where they are in their learning journey.

Her passion for education is rooted in a desire to see students grow both academically and spiritually. Lauren believes math is not only a subject of logic and precision but also a reflection of God’s order and creativity in the world. She enjoys seeing her students develop problem-solving skills that strengthen their character and perseverance.

““My goal is to help every student realize that they can succeed in math — with patience, practice, and the right encouragement,” Lauren shares.

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Education – Mathematics Concentration.

Experience:

Lauren’s dedication to nurturing both the minds and hearts of her students makes her a valued part of the THEO team. Her joy comes from seeing students not only master math concepts but also grow in confidence and faith along the way.

Lauren did not come to know the Lord until her 30s, and since becoming a believer, God has shown up in big ways. Two of those ways have been His calling for her to homeschool and to teach.

As a naturally math-minded person, Lauren found it both humbling and ironic that her oldest child struggled significantly in math. Through that experience, she developed a wide range of techniques and teaching approaches, which God later allowed to resurface and be refined through her work at THEO.

Lauren has a heart for helping students build confidence in mathematics by making complex concepts approachable and engaging. She emphasizes understanding over memorization and works to meet students where they are in their learning journey.

She is grateful for the opportunity to teach at THEO and considers it a joy to support students as they grow. Teaching has been a clear example of God’s faithfulness, and she is thankful to use the gifts He has given her to serve students and families.

Luis Jimenez

Luis Jimenez

Although Luis struggled with finding his calling in his early life, he knew for certain that he wanted to help others appreciate the world God has created and expand the opportunities available to them in the future.

From economics to pathobiology, his college studies gave him a deep appreciation for the sciences and a deep desire to study and understand the world. Working as a teaching assistant for his science professor, leading a team at a local Chick-fil-A, and instructing a Lego Robotics class at Tarrant County over the summers have given him valuable experience and a clear image of his calling.
As a teacher and as a Christian, Luis wants to serve others and further His kingdom in any way he can, especially in supporting homeschooled families. By teaching at THEO, he puts his skills, enthusiasm, and knowledge to use preparing students for whatever challenges await them in life.

God gave Susan a passion for teaching at an early age. She loves the interaction of ideas and trying to expand and spark excitement for science.
Her first experience was when she started working for a hospital as an Assistant Director of Health Sciences, where she was the liaison between the hospital and local corporations, giving monthly seminars about health issues for employees and their families. However, after having her first child, she felt God calling her to homeschool, so she put her career on hold and poured her passion into her children.
“What a gift and blessing it has been throughout the years and now reaping the benefits of having two children knowing the Lord and having two grandchildren to pass down that heritage.”

Emily Tanella

Emily has always loved science ever since she was young, fascinated with God’s creation and how everything works. Homeschooled her whole life from Pre-K through senior year, Emily even took classes at THEO during her four years of high school (Class of 2014).

Shortly after graduating, God led her down the path to nursing. She started at Collin County Community College, where she took anatomy and physiology. “I fell in love with that class and all the different systems in the human body. I knew for sure, in that class, that nursing was what I was meant to do.”

Now a Neonatal ICU nurse for over 6 years, Emily is excited to start her teaching journey at THEO as a young mom who hopes to homeschool her own children one day. “I look forward to showing students how incredibly, and beautifully, God made the human body. I’m so excited for students to experience some of the hands-on learning that made me fall in love with this class!”

Foreign Languages

Our language teachers provide immersive, communicative instruction that goes beyond vocabulary lists. Whether studying Spanish, French, American Sign Language, Japanese, or Chinese, students develop practical language skills while exploring other cultures.

Our foreign language faculty emphasizes conversation, cultural understanding, and real-world application—preparing students for travel, ministry, and global citizenship.

Mary Rebecca Bell

Mary Rebecca Bell

Mary draws on two years of living in Japan and studying the language there to bring authentic cultural perspective to her Japanese classes. Throughout the year, she draws deeply on her very happy memories of numerous, extensive road trips from England to France and her long-term fascination with languages.
With a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science (with Honors) and 16.5 years as an Air Force nurse reaching the rank of Major, Mary brings discipline and excellence to language instruction. She’s been homeschooling since 1994 and teaching at THEO since its inception.
“I have enjoyed learning languages for as long as I can remember!” Mary also teaches Starting Points Worldview and Saxon 6/5 math, ensuring students are grounded in their faith while developing language proficiency.

With over 15 years of dedicated Japanese language studies and JLPT certification, Mary delights in inspiring the same passion in her students. Since 2020, she has taught and tutored students in Japanese language, fostering their skills in speaking, reading, and writing. Mary’s expertise extends to Japanese culture and Asian history, where she enjoys connecting language learning with cultural and historical insights. She loves to share the joy God has given her – in exploring and understanding people – to inspire students’ appreciation for Japan and other Asian cultures.

Mary happily makes time to help any student who requests extra language tutoring.
“It is my honor and privilege to serve the THEO family, and I cannot wait to dive into the Spanish language alongside a new group of learners!”
Julie’s love for Spanish began as a freshman in high school when her family hosted a foreign exchange student. She and Paola easily learned from one another because they were aiming for communication of message! After realizing she had learned more from that experience than from her Spanish classes, Julie leaned hard into language theory in college, and set out to help students learn to actually communicate rather than memorize rules about the language.
“I knew this was how I would teach Spanish, and I’ve been blessed to use this method with hundreds of students over the last 30+ years.” By Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS®), language comes alive! Students find themselves immersed in language that they understand, can produce, and want to keep learning more.”

Julie's Goal:

In addition to her work with THEO, Julie provides teacher training for TPRS Books®, with the goal of giving every student the opportunity to have a TPRS certified teacher.

Education:

Experience:

Julie has over 30 years of experience between teaching in public and private schools, homeschool co-op settings, and homeschooling her own children. She currently offers high school classes in person through THEO, private online classes for children and adults, and teacher training. In addition to teaching, she enjoys travel, building relationships in the Hispanic community, and translating in a volunteer capacity.

Rob Clover-Brown

Robert Clover-Brown

Throughout the year, Robert draws deeply on his very happy memories of numerous, extensive road trips from England to France—”the ‘Chunnel’ under the water between England and France is indeed an experience”—and his long-term fascination with the country and its mellifluous language.
Robert’s French classes use lively, comprehensive textbooks supported by a variety of ancillary materials. Students engage in verbal and written exercises, interact with web-based French language programs, read and translate French stories, watch travel DVDs, translate French recipes and menus, play French board games, and share French-themed food (when attending in person at THEO).

Note:

Robert happily makes time to help any student who requests extra language tutoring.

I have been teaching American Sign Language (ASL) at THEO since 2011, and I truly love what I do. One of my greatest joys is introducing students to the beauty of ASL and the rich, fascinating culture of the Deaf community. Nothing excites me more than when a student comes to class eager to share about an interaction they were able to have with a Deaf person that crossed their path.

Over the years, I have taught hundreds of students across a wide range of academic levels and learning abilities. Some students enroll in ASL to fulfill a foreign language requirement, while others are drawn by a long-standing interest in signing. Some discover a passion for the language and go on to pursue careers in interpreting or Deaf education. Many students carry their signing skills into their chosen fields or everyday life, using ASL to connect with the Deaf individuals they meet.

Whether your student has a strong interest in sign language or simply needs a foreign language credit, I would be delighted to welcome them into my class.

Miss Gibson attended RHSA (Richardson Homeschool Association) all through elementary and middle school, then attended Town North (The Green Roof Co-op) for all 4 years of high school, graduating in 2018. She also attended THEO her Junior and Senior year.

After graduating, she became a student at Collin College, joined the Sign Language Interpreter Program, and graduated in August 2021.

Miss Gibson has always loved working with kids. She has helped at a summer Bible camp, taught piano, worked in childcare at her church, assisted at a Vacation Bible School for deaf kids, and been a nanny for several families.

She taught at Friday Adventures last year and is teaching again this year. “She can’t wait to see what the Lord has next for her!”

I was born and grew up in Beijing, China. I have a BSc. degree from Peking University. Then I went to Canada for graduate study. I earned a MSc.degree in Physics from the University of British Columbia and a MSc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. My husband and I moved to Plano due to his work.

I have been a teaching assistant and tutor during the time in the graduate schools, and I also taught ESL and high school math in Toronto.

I like to draw, watercolor paint, and Chinese paper cutting.

I started to take watercolor painting classes not long after we moved here.

I have been a teaching assistant and tutor in graduate schools, and I also taught ESL and high school math in Toronto. I started to teach Chinese language at THEO from 2011 and started to teach watercolor painting a few years later. I love to share my native language and Chinese culture with other people. And painting in watercolor is a lot of fun and brings joy and peace to my life and I would like to share that too.

¡Hola! I am a native Spanish speaker, born and raised in Cuba. I am married and have three lovely girls. With the help of God, I have been able to home school all three. My two oldest graduated from THEO and are now in college. Through home education, I had the opportunity to pass on my native language to my daughters. Homeschooling them helped me discover a passion for teaching.

Outside of our home, my first experience teaching was under the direction and guidance of THEO’s presigious Spanish teacher, Shari Schwarz. She fanned the flame of my desire to impact the lives of home schooled students with the gift of a second language. I have enjoyed stepping in as a substitute teacher for many THEO classes, and I am excited to begin teaching my own classes this year. Alongside fellow THEO Spanish teacher, Julie Smith, I am in the process of becoming certified as a TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) Teacher, and cannot wait to work with your students. It is going to be a fantastic year!

My name is Sra. Kristel Koukoua, and I’m thrilled to be a part of THEO this year! I grew up in southwestern Montana along the Big Hole River, where my mom’s intellectual background in Biology and Animal Science and my dad’s background in Range Science inspired a love for exploration and Truth. During my teens, I took on leadership roles at our summer Bible camp and church youth group, which shaped my understanding of faith and community. College challenged my beliefs and taught me to embrace diversity, and I was involved with Chi Alpha at Montana State University for almost 6 years, except for a semester studying abroad in Murcia, Spain.

After college, I felt called to mission work and spent a year in Honduras as a missionary teacher, where I worked at a bilingual school and tutored children in a foster home. I met my husband, an Ivorian electrical engineer, while salsa dancing in Missoula, MT where I was creating a Spanish program at Valley Christian School at the time. Today, we have two energetic sons, ages 8 and 3, who give me so much hope for their generation! As a family, we enjoy outdoor activities, reading The Wingfeather Saga (both the books and the animated series), soccer, and board games, especially Seven Wonders. My mission is to continue to mature in my walk with God and to disciple others in finding true freedom as well.

“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit […] Therefore, you will know them by their fruit” (Matthew 7:18,20, CEB)

Forensics Speech & Debate

Welcome to Forensics! Come learn the art of communication and discover the leader you can be!

THEO Forensics High School Speech & Debate Team

A forensics club offers students the greatest opportunity to improve their educational foundation. In fact, there is no other activity that can affect the lives of participants to such a positive degree in their academic, professional, social, and personal levels. The impact of speech and debate activities on our future leaders is enormous to our communities and the future of our country. Joining the THEO Forensics Speech & Debate Team will inspire students in ways they never dreamed possible and impact their lives in the best possible way. In fact, academically there exists no other enrichment activity that can increase test scores in all areas of academics more than speech and debate. In forensic competition students compete in areas of speech and debate. These areas include Dramatic and Humorous Interpretation, Poetry, Prose, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Lincoln/Douglas and Congressional Debate among other categories. Competitive forensics requires a high level of commitment from participants. Successful competitors spend hours researching, reading, and practicing for competition. But it is a labor of love as the students want to study and work to perfect their skills.

THEO Forensics Junior High Speech & Debate Team

Through the THEO Junior High Forensics Club you will make new friends while developing skills in leadership and literacy. You will join with thousands of students across the country and earn membership in the National Junior Forensics League, an honor society rewarding students for speaking in a variety of contexts, including interscholastic contests, in-class presentations and speaking at community groups and places of worship. Joining THEO Junior High Forensics Club will inspire students in ways they never dreamed possible and impact their lives in the best possible way. The goal of THEO Junior High Forensics Club is to guide, teach, and encourage students to expand their horizons and have a great deal of fun in the process of competitive speech and debate.

About World Views

Susan Bryant

Worldview 1

In addition to teaching Worldview 1, Mrs. Bryant also teaches a Tuesday afternoon Starting Points class which meets 1:30-4:30.
Starting Points

Next is her Human Geography class taught from 9:30-11:30 on Wednesdays at THEO, with prep for the AP Human Geography exam.
Human Geography

Mrs Bryant also teaches World History and Geography, a two credit class for high school students who love to tie together history with geography.
World History and Geography
